Akshardham

An Akshardham is a spiritual place for the Hindu religion located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It offers people a chance to sit and reflect, Akshardham offers this to its people and those who visit it. It is beautifully decorated and designed as a tribute to the Hindu Gods and the vibrant Hindu traditions. Upon visiting the Akshardham one is provided with the opportunity of a spirit enriching experience. The BAPS organization, Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha founded Akshardham. Its abbreviated as BAPS is a worldwide religious and civic organization within the Swaminarayan branch of Hinduism.

It is an organization led by its volunteers and non-profit support. The BAPS has centers all around the world supporting those who are in search for spirituality and providing help to those that might need it. The Akshardham was opened in 1992, before the Akshardham in New Delhi which was opened 13 years later. The Akshardham built with the help of over 4,000 volunteers from around the world who gave over 8 million hours to help build the complex.

Over 200 idols displayed for reflection throughout the Akshardham in Gujarat, each representing a different spiritual stalwart throughout millennia. The Akshardham provides visitors experiences in which they can explore a world with non-violence, have an awareness of the universal power of Hindu principles or ultimately admire the beauty and intricacy of the Akshardham taking in the significance of every detail.

Sat-Chit-Anand water show

One of the best experiences the Akshardham can offer is the Sat-Chit-Anand water show. Depicting the tale of Nachiketa confronting the God of Death, Yama, and ultimately receiving the knowledge of immortality and eternal happiness. The 45 minute include multi-color lasers, video and light projections, fireballs and underwater flames, and water jets across a water screen measuring 80 ft. in height and 60 ft. wide, accompanied by a symphony. The show plays nightly and starts at sunset, multiple shows performed during weekends or holidays.

However, before settling in to watch the water show, we suggest taking the time to explore the gardens. Encompassing over 15 acres of land, the gardens have thousands of trees, plants and shrubbery. Visitors can reflect on the statues displayed across the gardens depicting different Gods and different plights between Gods and demons. Aside from the garden, the Akshardham is also a museum. Inside the exhibition you can find dioramas and setting displays that depict Hindu values, as described by sacred scriptures. You can also experience an audio animatronic show, or experience the mountains and gorges of India within the theatre.

The Akshardham carefully designed by the BAPS and with the help of volunteers maintained over the years, in order to provide all visitors the chance to reflect on the prayer and find some spiritual peace.

If ever you find yourself in Ahmedabad, make the Akshardham a must see!

Auto World Vintage Car Museum

Our city of Ahmedabad has many great places to visit. Today we’re going to highlight the Auto World Vintage Car Museum. In India, we are very fond of cars. Vintage cars hold a special place in our hearts.

The museum is the private collection of Pranlal Bhogilal. Bhogilal, who passed away 7 years ago, was profiled in the late 80s because of his vast collection of automobiles, namely his collection of 93 Rolls Royce’s. Occasionally, he would let governors borrow his Rolls Royce to impress visiting dignitaries. Bhogilal opened up his private collection to the public and the museum usually opened to the public year round. But closed for a day in order to honor Bhogilal’s memory.

Collection of Antique Vehicles

The museum is a collection of antique vehicles including cars, motorcycles, utility vehicles and buggies. The museum, a love letter to the short time in history when automobiles were a sign of wealth and style. Within the collection you can find a vast array of rare and ceremonial cars. Visitors may drive the vehicles for a small fee.

Bhogilal has preserved most of these cars for decades in order for them to be a part of and on display at the museum. The museum alone needs about an hour for patrons to be able to see all the cars in the collection. But of course you can set time apart for a small meal at the cafeteria on site to meet with others who may also be interested in, and knowledgeable of these cars. With over 100 cars, including Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Daimlers, Langondas, Mercedeces, Maybachs, Packards and Cadillacs in the collection you might be talking for a long while.

Great Spot to Visit

The collection is all housed outdoors, with protective awnings covering cars from rain and sun exposure. It’s a great way to spend some time outside during nice days. Entry allowed to all ages, a great experience for children and parents who would love to teach their children about the wonders of the automobile industry. The museum shines a light on a time when automobiles were built to boast about wealth as opposed to modern cars that boast about advancement in technology and are design to give the modern day driver a sense of power.

Auto World highlights the beauty and intricacy of the automobiles that launched the industry we know today, and is a window into the small period of time where cars were for luxury and not everyday use.

This museum is just another great spot to visit if you ever find yourself in Ahmedabad. It is open year-round, and a great stop for the whole family.

Gandhi Ashram

An ashram is a monastery that serves a religious purpose for meditation and prayer. The Ashram usually serves dual purposes as domestic quarters and workplace for those that are devoted. Gandhi settled in our city of Ahmedabad, a few miles from our office here, after his return from South Africa. After a short time spent in Kochrab area, he moved near an area of open land near the river Sabarmati.

Gandhi lived in the ashram in Sabarmati for about 13 years. For those years it served as one of the central points for the Indian freedom struggle. Like all Ashrams, Gandhi’s served a dual purpose, serving as a institution in search for the truth. Also platform for all workers who wanted to come together to non-violently bring about freedom for India. It was Gandhi’s vision to create a new society based on truth and non-violence. While at the Ashram Gandhi formed a school in an effort to become more self-sufficient. The school focused on manual labor, agriculture and literacy.

Dandi Satyagraha

This was also the start of the Salt March, a movement of Civil Disobedience that was led by Gandhi. The Salt March, also known as the Dandi Satyagraha, lasted 24 days from March 12 to April 6, 1930. The march was a protest against taxation placed by British Officials on salt production, and the use of force to stop production when it was deemed illegal. Gandhi and 78 trusted volunteers march 240 miles down the coast, walking 10 miles a day to produce salt at different parts. The march ended at the coastal town of Dandi, where more salt was produced without paying tax, as people had joined the march along the way. On last day of Salt March, when Gandhi broke salt laws it sparked a chain of civil disobedience against the British Raj Salt Laws by millions more.

After the Salt March, however, there was still a long fight for Gandhi and his followers. Over 60,000 freedom fighters were jailed, and the British Government seized the Ashram. Gandhi asked the government to forfeit the Ashram, but they refused by which time Gandhi has decided to disband it. Later on, it would become a resting place for those that had been detained, and after locales decided to preserve it.

Indian Independence

Gandhi had declared he would not return to the Ashram until Indian Independence was won. On August 15, 1947 India was free of British rule, but Gandhi was assassinated in January of 1948 before he got a chance to return.

The Ashram still stands today as a beacon of inspiration and guidance, many other nations have used it as a symbol for the ideology that brought about India’s independence. It is also testimony to Gandhi’s life and mission, and testimony to the life of those that also fought in the struggle for India’s freedom.

It is a wonderful place to visit and is one of Ahmedabad’s major tourist attractions.
